Leaders

Inspire and show the way!

As a leader of a sports club or organisation, you are responsible for shaping the culture within it: you decide ‘how we do things here’.

Unfortunately, the prevailing culture in some sports clubs and organisations in Scotland involves ‘Winning at all Costs’ – the match, game or competition on Saturday – often at the expense of the social, emotional and longer term skills development of young people.

Moreover, this ‘Win at all Cost’ mentality can also have a significant negative impact on recruitment retention and longer term capacity building in your club.

PCS offers a more desirable alternative to ‘Winning at all costs’ that can bring your club or organisation even greater success within and out with the sporting arena.

PCS advocates a positive shift in the culture of youth sport in Scotland and believes that leaders can play a significant role in shaping that change by embracing the PCS ethos built on the principles of:

  • Honouring the Game (ROOTS)

Teaching respect for Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, Self

  •  Redefining Winner (ELM)

Focusing on Effort, Learning skills and recovering from Mistakes

  • Filling the Emotional Tank (E-Tank)

Encourage, Teach, Appreciate, Non-verbal support, Know how to praise

Committing your club or organisation to creating a positive coaching culture in which:

  • all coaches are Double-Goal Coaches.
  • the club/organisation acquires the PCS Kitemark.
  • all the key influencers within or attached to the club/organisation – volunteers, officials, parents and coaches – share a common language and vision geared towards developing skills, building character and teaching valuable life lessons to young people in a truly family friendly club.

Positive Coaching Scotland: Developing young people through sport!

"Sport can help to develop the potential of young people, both inside and outside school. It's not just about winning but about competing against yourself, stretching yourself to realise your potential, and the best way of doing that is through positive reinforcement."
