Glasgow primary schools embrace positive message
18/05/2010
The Positive Coaching Scotland message is continuing to spread across Glasgow thanks to work being undertaken by Glasgow City Council
Focusing on the council’s target areas, the primary PE team is working with parents, teachers and children to create a more positive learning environment for the youngsters in the city.
“I’m actually going in to speak to the head teachers first of all to let them know about the programme and how it can change people and how it can change culture for the better, how it can change youth sport for the better,” Jonny Penman, Physical Eduation teacher told positivecoachingscotland.com.
Penman does physical work which he does with primary ones and twos, he then presents a ‘Positive Sports Parents’ workshop to their parents and he also speaks to the primary school teachers and discusses how the key principles of PCS can help them in their lessons, linking in with the health and well-being outcomes from the Curriculum for Excellence.
Working at the core of the development of young people through sport, Penman is all too aware of the crucial role Positive Coaching Scotland is playing in this country.
“Positive Coaching Scotland plays a fundamental key role because we know that only about 0.1% of children are going to make it to elite level. We want kids to stay in sport for a lot longer so that they can experience these character building life lessons which are so important.”
He concluded: “We need to make sure kids stay in sport and have these positive experiences for as long as they can.”
"Positive Coaching Scotland will be a major culture-changing programme in Scotland, and we are determined to ensure that in due course it impacts the lives of all young Scots involved in sport"
